Biman opens non-stop London flight tomorrow
Biman is set to fly with a new look by opening non-stop Dhaka-London flights, which will save travellers time, officials said yesterday.
“The first non-stop flight to London, with the new logo and livery, is scheduled to depart Dhaka Saturday morning,” said Muhammad Zakiul Islam, managing director and chief executive of Biman.
Officials said the carrier would operate three non-stop flights a week on the Dhaka-London route. Also, it will fly to London via Dubai once a week.
Biman planned for non-stop flights between Dhaka and London after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the national carrier's new logo and livery.
The airline has recently taken delivery of leased Boeing 777-200ER and Boeing 737-800 NG with the new look as part of its re-branding initiative for emerging as a commercially viable carrier.
Zakiul said the state-run carrier will begin nonstop flight with the Boeing 777-200 ER aircraft, having 323 seats.
Biman officials expected that introduction of nonstop flights through Boeing 777-200ER would enable the carrier to receive increased travellers because of the reduced flying hours and less delay in flights.
Earlier, British Airways, which quit Dhaka in March 2009, operated non-stop flights to London.
At present, there is no non-stop flight to London and travellers have to go to the European destination by detour, which means more flying hours for them.
Biman officials said non-stop flight will take 11 hour on an average compared with the present about 15-hour travel either through one stop or connecting flight.
“We expect to receive more passengers due to launching non-stop flights,” said a senior official of Biman who is in charge of sales and marketing.
He expected Biman's cabin factor would be around 90 percent because of such non-stop flights.
