One killed, 50 injured as villagers clash
One person was killed and 50 others were injured in a fierce clash between two groups of villagers at Pakhiteki near Haripur bazaar in Jaintapur upazila here yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Latif, 60, hailed from Hemu Tinpara village of the upazila.
Police and witnesses said the villagers of Hemu Tinpara and Panchpara clashed over establishing supremacy on a grazing ground around 11:00am.
Both the groups used lethal weapons during the hour-long clash that left Latif dead on the spot.
Police lobbed teargas shells and fired gunshot to disperse the feuding villagers.
Of the injured, 35 took first aid at the Upazila Health Complex and the Osmani Medical College Hospital while the rest were admitted to the medical college hospital.
The clashing villagers also put barricade on the adjacent Sylhet-Tamabil Highway. Later, Rab and police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control around 12:30pm.
Golak Chandra Basak, officer-in-charge of Jaintapur Police Station, told the Daily Star there had been a longstanding dispute between the villagers.
