Onion price shoots up

Price of local variety onion hiked by Tk 15 per kg in the last three days while potato and powder milk also saw a fresh price rise both in the retail and wholesale markets in the capital.
While visiting different retail kitchen markets, it was found that price of local onion rose to Tk 72-75 a kg yesterday from Tk 58-60 three days ago. In wholesale markets, onion was selling at Tk 68-72 per kg on the day.
Price of Indian variety onion rose to Tk 56- 58 a kg yesterday from Tk 52-55 three days ago.
A wholesaler at Karwan Bazar market said he purchases onion from farmers and rural markets in Rajshahi. Its price saw a sharp rise there in the last few days. “I purchased onion at Tk 2,650 a maund (40 kg) from Rajshahi markets yesterday as against Tk 2,050 three days ago," said the trader, Nurul Islam.
A number of customers at Hatirpul kitchen market blamed the traders for the fresh price hike saying they always produce some plea for raising prices of essentials.
Potato price leapt to Tk 25 - 26 per kg yesterday from Tk 22- 23 three days back in retail markets while the price was Tk 23-Tk 24 per kg in wholesale markets yesterday.
Wholesalers attributed the price hike to damage of potato seedlings in different areas due the recent cyclone and consequent sharp rise in the demand for potato for fresh planting.
Abdul Latif Mia, president of Karwan Bazar wholesale kitchen market, said supply of local onion and potato is now far short of the demand, resulting in their price rise.
Meanwhile, powder milk of different brands like Dano, Diploma, Red Cow and Anchor saw a fresh hike in their prices over the last one week.
Price of a 2-kg container of Dano powder milk rose to Tk 1,160 -1,180 yesterday from Tk 970- 980 a week ago.
One kg packs of Diploma, Red Cow and Anchor powder milk sold between Tk 510- 520 yesterday as against Tk 470-480 last week.
Powder milk distributors claimed price hike in the international market and shortage of supply caused the price rise in local market.
