Work at Teknaf land port resumes
Activities at Teknaf land port in Cox's Bazar resumed yesterday after withdrawal of an indefinite strike enforced by the businessmen.
Activities at the port came to a halt on December 31 following a scuffle between a businessman and a port manager over clearance of a truck carrying excess of imported dried fish from Myanmar.
The government incurred a loss of about Tk 2 crore in revenue due to the strike, port sources said.
A meeting between the businessmen and port authorities was held at Teknaf upazila nirbahi officer's office at 11:00am yesterday. As the port authorities at the meeting announced to withdraw two officials, reportedly responsible for the incident, the businessmen called off their strike.
UNO Nazimuddin said the businessmen withdrew their strike after the meeting decided to withdraw port officials Jasim Uddin and Salah Uddin in the next three days and meeting other demands of the businessmen.
Supply of different imported commodities including perishable goods like fish to Dhaka, Chittagong and other parts of the country started at 3:00pm yesterday.
Mahmudul Hasan, president of Exporters, Importers and businessmen's Association said the government and the port authorities incurred a huge loss due to strike.
Sources concerned said the incident occurred at the land port on the night of December 31 as Businessman Abdul Amin of Teknaf was trying to obtain a gate pass for his dried fish-laden truck without paying tax to the port authorities.
The exporters and importers and truckers brought out a procession inside the port and later held a rally on Cox's Bazar-Teknaf highway the following day demanding gate pass for the dried fish-laden truck and removal of the two port officials whom they held responsible for assaulting a trucker and a helper.
