Omari on the treble
Samir Omari fired the Citycell Bangladesh League's second hattrick to power Sheikh Russel KC to a convincing 4-1 win over visiting Chittagong Mohammedan in their fourth home match at the Birshreshtha Shaheed Sepoy Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur yesterday.
The outcome helped Sheikh Russel maintain their third position in the 13-team point table with 19 points from seven matches, two points behind joint league leaders Abahani and Mohammedan.
Away at the Sylhet Stadium, Beanibazar SC broke the unbeaten run of 10-man Brothers Union with a 2-1 win over them in the day's other clash.
The first defeat in six matches meant Brothers Union stuck to their previous nine points while Beanibazar have five points from five outings.
Pappu put newcomers Beanibazar ahead in the 12th minute while Guinean recruit Mohammed Conte doubled the margin three minutes into the second half. Brothers Union's Ghanaian striker Enock Bentil, who was playing his first match after the break of the league following the SAFF Championship, pulled one goal back in the 57th minute. But the All Oranges could not avoid falling to their first defeat in the league as they were reduced to 10 men with Ghanaian recruit Seven Aboua sent off eight minutes from time.
Back at Kamalapur, Sheikh Russel enjoyed superior ball possession from the word go against the visiting Chittagong Mohammedan, who snatched credible points from Brothers Union and Beanibazar in their previous two drawn outings as Moroccan striker Omari, local forward Yousuf and winger Mobarak Hossain made a lethal attack upfront with Omari striking three goals in a row after Yousuf gave Sheikh Russel a deserved lead following the barren first half.
The game got off to sparkling start with Mobarak nearly giving Sheikh Russel an early lead in the very second over when the winger narrowly sent his angular shot inside the danger zone over the crosspiece.
Brazilian striker Reneto Lucas disappointed Sheikh Russel to squander a chance despite getting the opponent goalkeeper Uttam Barua in a one-on-one situation.
After a barren first half, Mobarak ran down the right to enter the box and crossed for Yousuf, who just tapped the ball home to give Sheikh Russel a deserved lead in the 54th minute.
But, the celebration of Sheikh Russel lasted only two minutes as Mohammedan bit back in the match as striker Akbar Hossain Ridon, picking a freekick from Anthony Pale Doe, shrugged off two defenders to lob the ball from the left to the top of the far net, giving goalkeeper Mamun Khan no chance to react to equal the margin in the 56th minute.
Afterwards, Sheikh Russel stepped up the attack and got an immediate reward as Omari, being set ip by a Yousuf lob from the left, sent the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper Uttam to put Russel ahead again in the 66th minute.
Nine minutes later, the Moroccan striker, who also played for same outfit last season, made the margin 3-1 availing a back-heel from Yousuf and he struck the team's fourth and his seventh goal to complete his hattrick in the 82nd minute. This time substitute Mohammad Rony fed the ball for the Moroccan, who surpassed top-scorer Abahani's Enamul Haque and Mohammedan's Zahid Hasan Emily.
Meanwhile, Arambagh KS's Kenyan striker Nicodemus G Anunda struck the first hattrick also against Chittagong Mohammedan at the MA Aziz Stadium.
