5 killed in road crashes
Five people, including two Ansar men, were killed and 13 others injured in separate road accidents in Faridpur and Kurigram yesterday.
Our correspondent in Faridpur reports: Four people, including a freedom fighter and two Ansar members, were killed and 12 others, including 10 Ansar men, injured in a road accident in front of Niribili picnic spot at Digholia in the district's Madhukhali upazila yesterday.
The accident took place when a pickup van collided head-on with an oil tanker, killing Helaluddin Joarder, 55, a freedom fighter and cashier of Faridpur Sugar Mill, on the spot and injuring 15.
The injured were being rushed to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, but Tota Miah, 40, the driver of the lorry, and Sushil Kumar Bala, 30, an Ansar member, succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital.
Nazrul Islam, 45, another Ansar member, succumbed to his injuries while he was being taken to Dhaka.
Sources said three employees of the sugar mill were going to buy sugarcane when the accident took place. As they were carrying Tk 3.40 lakh, 12 Ansar members, who work for the mill, were accompanying them.
When contacted, Syed Mohsinul Haque, officer in-charge-of Madhukhali Police Station, said police recovered Tk 2.21 lakh from the spot while five were arrested for trying to make away with the rest of the money.
The arrestees were identified as Shahjahan, Hasmat, Md Shahidul, Kalam and Kamrul.
Our correspondent in Kurigram adds: A minor girl was killed in a road accident in Kurigram town yesterday.
The victim was identified as Meem, 5, daughter of Hossen Ali of the town's Krishnapur area.
The accident took place at about 1:15pm when a power tiller knocked her down as she went to the road near her residence.
Local people seized the tiller, but the driver managed to escape.
