Mauritius scraps decision to deport workers
Foreign Minister Dipu Moni yesterday said Mauritius has abandoned its plan to deport Bangladeshi workers.
"The authorities of Mauritius have withdrawn their decision to deport Bangladeshi workers . . . Only those who have violated the country's law or are engaged in criminal activities will return home," Dipu Moni told a press briefing in the city on her return from her tour of the island country.
The foreign minister said some 12,000 Bangladeshi workers -- half of them are women -- were staying in Mauritius.
"During the last month's Commonwealth Summit in Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Mauritius counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam discussed the issue when he agreed to withdraw the decision," Dipu Moni said.
