Ghatak and Ray films picked as favourites by online voters

It was Bengali feature films by Ritwik Ghatak and Satyajit Ray, which emerged at the top of an online voting by nearly two million Indians.
The first slot went to Ghatak's most popular "Meghe Dhaka Tara" starring Supriya Devi, Anil Chatterjee and Bijon Bhattacharjee. The second and third places were bagged by Ray's "Charulata", featuring Soumitra Chatterjee and Madhabi Chakrabarty, and the timeless classic "Pather Panchali".
The contest for top 20 Indian films was held by the Entertainment Society of Goa as a promotional event for the just concluded 40th International Film Festival of India.
Among the films which figure in the top 20 list in the contest are Mrinal Sen's "Bhuvan Shome" in 7th spot, Ray's "Apu Trilogy" in 15th, Bollywood's biggest blockbuster "Sholay" (4th) directed by Ramesh Sippy, Mehboob Khan-directed "Mother India" (9th), MS Satthyu's "Garam Hawa" (8th), "Mughal-e-Azam" (12th) by K Asif, Guru Dutt's "Pyaasa" (6th), Hrishikesh Mukherjee's "Anand" (20th) and "Guide" (18th).
Kundan Shah's comedy "Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron" made in 1983 took the 17th spot and is the only film made after 1980s to figure in the list.
The nomenclature for the online contest was derived from the highly popular limited over format of cricket envisaging 20 overs for each side.
