Extortionist dies in mob beating
Mob lynched an alleged extortionist at North Ibrahimpur in Kafrul early yesterday after he along with two accomplices hurled homemade bombs at a local NGO there for toll.
The dead was identified as Jakir Hossain, 20, a resident of Mirpur-13.
Witnesses said a group of youths threw bombs at the NGO and tried to leave the place.
The locals chased them and caught Jakir and handed him over to police after beating him severely, they said.
Kafrul police rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he died at around 2:00am yesterday.
Kafrul Police Station OC Delwar Hossain told The Daily Star that a notorious gang had been demanding Tk 1 lakh as toll from the NGO for the last 20 days.
However, Jakir's mother Nur Jahan Begum claimed that her son was not an extortionist. Nur Jahan said she and her son had long been running a tea stall in front of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority.
