Protect consumers' rights
Speakers at a discussion in Gaibandha yesterday called for united efforts to implement the Consumers' Rights Protection Act.
The Gaibandha unit of Consumers' Association of Bangladesh (CAB) organised the discussion at Gaibandha Zila Parishad Hall Room.
CAB started campaigning for the act in 2002 and the government enacted Consumers' Rights Protection Ordinance 2008 on October 6.
The ordinance was made a law on February 28, 2009.
Speakers at the discussion said everyone should be conscious of his/her right.
Referring to a report of World Health Organisation (WHO), the speakers said advertisements of food and non-alcoholic beverages encouraged children to consume more junk food contained with high-level fat, sugar and salt.
To address the issue, Consumes International (CI) had called upon the guardians to monitor what their school-going children are having during tiffin period, they added.
They also demanded controlling marketing of adulterated junk food and soft drinks.
KM Rezaul Hoque, vice president of CAB Gaibandha unit, presided over the discussion while Md Shahidul Islam, deputy commissioner, was the chief guest.
Kollol Chakravarty, chief executive officer of Gaibandha Zila Parishad, Abdul Latif Hakkani, vice president of Chamber of Commerce, M Abdus Salam, chief executive of Gono Unnayan Kendra, President of Gaibandha Press Club Gobinda Lal Das and Secretary Abu Zafar Sabu also spoke on the occasion.
