Road crashes kill 5, injure 44
At least five people were killed and 44 others injured in separate road accidents in Chittagong, Gaibandha, Natore, Netrakona and Jhenidah yesterday.
Staff correspondent from Chittagong reports: A minor boy was killed when a city service bus ran over him in front of Bangladesh Television Chittagong Centre in the port city yesterday.
The dead was identified as Abdul Hamim, 06, son of one Nur Hossain of Shahrasti upazila in Chandpur.
Sources said an AK Khan Gate-bound city service bus ran over Hamim when he was crossing the road at around 1:30pm, leaving him dead on the spot.
Angry locals and students from nearby University of Science and Technology, Chittagong (USTC) ransacked the bus and put up barricade on the Zakir Hossain road for an hour following the accident.
They also damaged three more vehicles.
The mob also put up barricade on the road, causing a serious traffic jam at Zakir Hossain Road and GEC intersection. Later, police brought the situation under control.
Hamim came to visit his maternal grandfather's house near the television centre from his village home recently, police said.
Our correspondent from Gaibandha adds: Two people were killed and five others injured when a speedy truck knocked a rickshaw van on Gobindaganj-Ghoraghat Road at Kamarpara here yesterday.
The dead were identified as Sujan, 26, and Babu, 24, of Gobindaganj pourashava. The injured were rushed to local health complex.
Local people caught the driver and handed over to police.
A correspondent from Natore adds: One rickshaw van puller was killed and two others were injured in a road accident on Natore-Dhaka highway at Chalkrampur in Natore town yesterday.
The dead was identified as Sakil, 34, of village Gunarygram under Natore Sadar upazila.
Police and witnesses said the accident occurred when the driver of a speedy Dhaka-bound passenger coach of Hanif enterprise lost his control over the steering while he was trying to rescue a motorcycle. The coach hit a rickshaw van, leaving Sakil dead on the spot.
Fire fighters sent the injured to the Natore Sadar hospital in critical condition.
Our Correspondent from Netrakona says: One person was killed and 20 others injured in a road accident on Netrakona-Kalmakanda Road at Gurastan under Kamlmakanda upzila yesterday, police sources said.
The dead was identified as Ali Osman, 35, of village Keshobpur under Kalmakanda upazila.
Police and local people said the accident occurred when the driver of a Netrakona-bound passenger bus from Kalmakanda lost his control over steering and fall into a roadside ditch at at Gurastan, leaving bus passenger Ali Osman killed on the spot and 20 others injured.
The serious injured Policer Ma, 60, Khaleda Akter, 15, Shamsher Khan, 55, Shohel, 7, and Anwara Khatun, 40, were rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital in critical condition. The others were sent to Netrakona Sadar Hospital and Kalmakanda Upzaila Health Complex.
Our correspondent from Jhenidah adds: Thirty-five people were injured in separate road mishaps at Bhatoi Bazar under Shailkupa upazila here.
Police said an accident occurred when a Khulna-bound passenger bus collided head-on with an egg-laden truck, leaving 30 injured.
Of the injured, condition of Sabuj, Sirajul and Badsha were stated to be critical. They were rushed to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital.
Hundreds of vehicles got stranded on the Dhaka-Khulna highway following the accident.
Meanwhile, a Jhenidah-bound sand-laden truck collided head-on with a timber-laden truck at Garaganj Bazar under Shailkupa upazila, leaving five, including the driver and helper of the truck, injured.
Of the injured Bilal, Aminul and Mintu were sent to Shailkupa local health complex.
