3 sued on charge of instigating principal Touhafa's suicide
Husband of deceased principal of Saidpur Adorsha Girls' School and College Touhafa Begum filed a case with Saidpur Police Station on Monday night accusing three persons for instigating her suicide.
The accused are Amzad Hossain Sarker, former chairman of the institution's managing committee, also former BNP lawmaker from Nilphamari-2 (Saidpur and Kishoreganj), his brother Rashidul Islam Sarker, also Saidpur unit Jubo Dal president, and Ismail Hossain, office assistant of the institution.
The accused fled the area after filing of the case, said the officer-in-charge of Saidpur Police Station.
It was alleged in the case that the three accused with the connivance of each other misappropriated Tk 20 lakh from the institution fund during the last four-party alliance government.
Touhafa Begum could not realise the money from them after repeated efforts and there was a misunderstanding with the newly formed school managing committee regarding the matter.
Filled with frustration and fear of social humiliation, she committed suicide on October 30 morning, goes the case statement.
Police recovered the body of Touhafa Begum, 49, hanging from the ceiling fan after breaking open the door of her room at her Nayabazar residence under Saidpur municipality on Friday morning, said Saidpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ismail Hossain said.
Before suicide, the principal wrote down two notes -- one to the new managing committee president and the other to her husband.
Police recovered the two notes from her residence on the day of her suicide and exposed it to newsmen on Sunday.
The notes were written on official pad and carried her signature and seal.
“I wanted to live in this beautiful earth but some of the school managing committee members did not let me survive,” Touhafa said in the notes.
In the note written to the present managing committee president, the deceased said, "Through evil cooperation, the trio [former managing committee president Amzad Hossain Sarker, his younger brother Rashidul Islam Sarker and office assistant Ismail Hossain] misappropriated Tk 20 lakh from the institution fund and imposed its responsibility on me," she wrote.
"Recently I met Amzad Hossain Sarker, Rashidul Islam Sarker and Ismail Hossain several times and tried to persuade them to deposit the misappropriated money in the institution fund but they denied their offence.
"For this, I could not give the proper report on the institution's account to the newly formed managing committee. I don't like to live in this earth with the false blame upon me,” she wrote.
In the note addressing her husband, Touhafa Begum wrote, "I am victim of conspiracy. The three conspirators did not let me live on this earth. Please forgive me for my decision to leave you all untimely. Take care of our two sons and the only daughter to make them worthy citizens.”
When contacted, the present president of the managing committee of the institution, Moksedul Islam said, "The institution was progressing day by day due to honest and dedicated service of Touhafa Begum who worked as principal from its opening day. Those who instigated her suicide must be brought to trial."
Touhafa Begum's unnatural death cast a pall of gloom in the district as she was well known as an honest, dedicated and hard working principal.
Shortly after her suicide, a vested quarter circulated in the area that her husband Akhter Hossain, a former union parishad chairman, beat her to death.
The quarter also tried to bury her without post mortem.
However, their bid foiled and at the initiative of the district administration, her post mortem was performed in Nilphamari District Hospital on Friday evening.
