Artistes with a dream
Shahid Shadhan Music College, Pabna recently organised a reception for new students at its campus. At the function, teachers, students, governing body members and the elite of the district headquarters emphasised the need for the college to create real artistes. The event included a discussion and cultural programme.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Moha-mmad Saidur Rahman, also the president of college governing body, chaired the discussion, while the former principal of Pabna Government Bulbul College Professor Shibojit Nag was the chief guest.
The speakers were principal of the Music College Abdul Matin Khan, principal of Adarsha Mahila College Idris Ali Bishwas, trustee of Bangladesh Hindu Kalyan Trust Ganesh Ghosh, secretary of Bonomali Institute Abul Masud and secretary of Red Crescent Society Abdul Hamid Khan.
Shahid Shadhan Music College -- one of the three such institutions across the country -- has created artistes ever since Independence so it should get government support. The college is also beset with problems -- there are not enough teachers or other educational facilities, speakers expressed. They also vowed to help the college groom real artistes, imbued with the spirit of the martyred freedom fighters.
Shahid Shadhan Music College was established in 1972, in memory of Shadhan, a martyred freedom fighter and talented artiste.
The college was closed in 1975 after a political change in Bangladesh. Later the college resumed operations in 1998 and is going strong since then, said Mohammad Abdul Matin Khan, principal of the college.
The new students or 'freshers' cherish their own ambitions. We are fortunate to gain admission in Shahid Shadhan Music College. Our dream is to graduate as artistes, said Upodesh Roy and Kolpona Khatun, both first year students of the college.
Next on the cards was a cultural programme. Music teachers of the college, Fulorenu Das, Abul Hashem, Abul Kashem and Shandipa Sarkar conducted the programme with the participation of the college students.
