Engrossment with architectural lines and shapes
Mustapha Khalid Palash is a very well known architect in our country. His constructions are noted for their being in 21st century mode, verging on experi-mentalism. His novel approaches towards architecture make him peerless or practically singular in our country. Besides being an architect, he is also an ardent painter. Palash's solo painting exhibition titled “Of Conflict and Harmony” is now on at Gallery of Fine Arts, Asiatic Society, Nimtoli, Ramna, Dhaka.
From his childhood, art has been keenly connected with his umbilical cord. As the son of a painter, he grew up in an artistic ambience. During this time, he started to detect the imaginative world and documented his vision and observation.
When Palash feels saddened and his creative endeavour flourishes, brush and colours assist him to explore his inner vision. He records his pains, happiness and experiences through his canvas, which becomes a mirror of his pensive mood as reflected in his creative process. In the exposition, this is a clear statement about his aesthetic explorations. He is not concentrated on any particular theme, but nevertheless his themes are inextricably connected to each other. His paintings, done in oil and acrylic, feature various architectural designs or shapes. They as well plunge deep into Nature. He has complete freedom to identify himself for his working styles that are apparently synchronised and technically phenomenal. He wants to proceed with a certain style that can become a personal hallmark of his works.
Colour is the most predominant aspect in his works. Vibrant colours and fragmented shapes present a kaleidoscopic vision for the viewers. His works look very animated and vigorous because of the use of thick, abundant colours and evocative lines. In fact, his rectangular and vertical lines create varied dazzling rays with each ray possessing an individual look and language. The lines criss-cross over the paintings. A number of his works are engrossed with round shaped forms. These various sizes of spherical shapes have apparently a spinning look. The colours' intensity is very noticeable in his works.
As an admirer of nature, Palash portrays deep forests, searching out its mystical beauty. He feels that nature helps us to explore our identity and existence. His individual view of nature is distinct because of its quiet and silent appearance.
As an architect, Palash usually concentrates on his city, Dhaka. The city's hustle and bustle, its architectural elements and vicariousness are also focused in his art works. Dhaka's raw structure and its compact atmosphere are captured in his works with liveliness and intimacy.
Drawings are an appearance of the thoughts, the inner world and what literally makes the daily life of an artist. A painter's drawings give articulate expression to his or her personality and thinking process. Palash's drawings show the world the way he sees it, and manifest the essence of the things he has seen. His drawings are also mirror of his mind frame. His lines signify the modern mode of expression. His expression features varied structures, oval, encircled and doodle forms. The drawings clearly endorse his architectural experiences over the years. He likes to draw when he is chatting with someone. He does it without any fixed intention. He gets inspiration for doing many paintings from his competence in drawing. His drawings are more expressive and thought provoking than merely descriptive.
The exhibition ends on November 22.
