Seven held for contaminated blood sale

The court led by magistrate Anwar Pasha raided the Famous Blood Bank and Diagnostic Centre at noon and arrested its owners Anisur Rahman and Harun-ur-Rashid and five brokers.
Talking to The Daily Star, Anwar Pasha said the centre had been collecting blood from drug addicts and supplying those to different hospitals and clinic including Shaheed Suhrawardi through their broker.
The centre had been running since last year violating conditions and norms for running a blood bank, he added.
The court, accompanied by a team of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and a Health Directorate official, also seized machineries worth Tk 5 lakh from the centre and 58 bags of blood.
Anwar also said the blood bank collected blood from the drugs users in exchange of Tk 130 to Tk 150 per bag and sold those at Tk 800 to Tk 1,500.
The brokers used bring patients to the centre from different hospitals promising them of proper diagnostic tests but cheat them by providing substandard services.
