2 shot dead in Rangamati
An activist of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) and a member of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS) were shot dead in two separate incidents at Sakrachhari village on Thursday and at Sizakbazar yesterday respectively.
The dead UPDF man was identified as Badhi Chakma, 21, son of Mongal Dhan Chakma, of Bakchhari village under Barkal upazila.
Police quoted locals saying a gunfight between the armed men of PCJSS and UPDF for supremacy over the areas erupted Thursday afternoon in a jungle near Sakrachhari, some three kilometres from Barkal sadar upazila, leaving the UPDF activist dead on the spot.
Barkal police said they had recovered the body from the jungle and recorded a murder case. Autopsy of the body was performed yesterday at Rangamati General Hospital.
Shanti Deb Chakma, leader of Rangamati unit UPDF, claimed that Badhi Chakma was an active member of the organisation. He strongly protested the killing and demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the culprits.
In another incident, a union leader of PCJSS was shot dead reportedly by armed cadres of UPDF at Sizakbazar under Baghaichhari upazila yesterday around 9:00am.
The deceased, Tipu Chakma, 33, son of Indra Sen Chakma, was secretary of Khedarmara unit PCJSS. He along with some other colleagues went there to attend a party programme, sources said.
Protesting the incident, PCJSS brought out a procession and held a rally at the premises of Rangamati Deputy Commissioner's office in the town yesterday afternoon.
The PCJSS leaders alleged that Tipu was killed in the attack by a group of UPDF activists led by Tapan Jyoti Chakma and Bosumoti Chakma.
