'Govt firm to implement RTI law'
The government will meet all the challenges to implementing the Right to Information (RTI) law, lawmaker Shahriar Alam said at a seminar yesterday.
The government has enacted this law to ensure the people's rights through providing them with accurate information, said Alam, also a member of the parliamentary standing committee on information ministry.
The Press Information Department (PID) organised the daylong seminar on 'Right to Information Act and its implementation' at a hotel in Rajshahi, with Principal Information Officer AKM Shamim Chowdhury in the chair.
Deputy Secretary Bijon Lal Dev presented the keynote paper. Rajshahi University teachers Dulal Chandra Biswas, Hasibul Alam Prodhan and AKhtar Jahan also spoke.
"Implementing any law is more challenging than enacting it, but our government will implement the RTI law effectively considering its importance," said lawmaker Alam.
Other speakers said that with the enactment of RTI law in July, the government has built a strong foundation for a democratic and corruption-free society.
They suggested that the process of empowering people through RTI law should start at the grassroots level.
They also called for launching an awareness campaign about the people's right to information.
