Kuntal, Rumman star on Day 1
Kuntal Chandra and Rumman Islam excelled on the opening day when the Challengers Cup four-day competition got underway at the Dhanmondi Cricket Stadium yesterday.
Right-hander Kuntal, coming in at number five, occupied the crease for nearly four hours to score unbeaten 65 off 151 balls that contained five boundaries as Team West managed a decent 246 all out in 71 overs after being sent into bat first by Team East's captain Debabrata Paul.
Paul's new ball partner Rumman was the most successful bowler as he picked up four wickets for 30 runs in 13 overs.
Zahidul Islam, a leading run-scorer in First Division cricket of Dhaka, made 43 off 52 deliveries with the help of eight boundaries and he associated in a second wicket stand of 59 runs with Sanjoy Chakraborty (29 off 53 balls) after West opener Rashedul Haque's early dismissal on 10.
It was however number ten Arif Hossain who helped his side reach a respectable total by making 34 off 24 balls during his 55-run ninth wicket partnership with wicketkeeper-batsman Kuntal.
Team West scored 55 for one before stumps were drawn for the day with Monirul Islam (18) and Nizamuddin Ripon (14) at the crease.
Former national pace bowler Hasibul Hossain got the only success by removing opener Shakil Haider who scored 22 runs.
