Students, bus workers clash in Gazipur
Vehicular movement on Dhaka-Kapasia-Kishoreganj Highway remains suspended since yesterday noon following clashes at Kapasia between students and bus workers over bus fare.
Witnesses said the students had put up a barricade from 12:00pm to 2:30pm while the bus employees blocked the road later.
The clashes ensued between some of the students of Kapasia College and employees of a bus at around 12:00pm as the students offered half of the fare.
At one stage, other students of the college joined those students and ransacked several buses and put up a barricade on the road that continued till 2:30pm.
Bangladesh Chhatra League Kapasia upazila unit President Mohammad Selim said bus employees beat up the students with iron rods when they offered half fare.
Kapasia Bus Workers' Union General Secretary Lehaz Uddin said five seats are allotted for students in each bus.
As the employees protested additional seats for students, they swooped on the employees, damaging the buses and put up a barricade on the road.
Officer-in-Charge of Kapasia Police Station Khandaker Mizanur Rahman said discussion between the students and the bus employees was going on till filing of the report at 8:30pm.
