LOC meet for the first time
The introductory meeting of the local organizing committee (LOC) for the ICC World Cup 2011 was held at the offices of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
The main agenda of the meeting was to discuss issues related to staging the 2011 World Cup in Dhaka.
In the absence of newly installed BCB president Mustafa Kamal, who is now in South Africa for the Champions trophy, the convenor of the World Cup 2011 organizing committee Dewan Shafiul Arefin presided over the meeting.
Arefin informed that he along with host tournament director, Ali Ahsan recently toured South Africa to scope out the organization and arrangements for the Champions Trophy. They visited stadiums in Johannesburg, Centurion and Pretoria as well as inspecting a venue for the FIFA World Cup 2010, in the hope of picking up some ideas for replication.
Arefin also informed that an inspection team from ICC would be visiting Bangladesh from 26-28 October to check progress at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur as well as the alternate venues of Fatullah and the Chittagong Divisional Stadium.
The media centre in Mirpur is also set for a face-lift that would see it accommodate at least 270 working journalists. Similarly, facilities at Fatullah and Chittagong will be upgraded to accommodate at least 250 working journalists.
Finally, an international tender process will be initiated to invite interested event management specialists to organize the opening ceremony of the 2011 World Cup. Arefin informed that only firms with experience in organizing similar mega events will be able to participate in the tender process.
The opening ceremony will be held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on February 17.
