Attack on religious festival in Cox's Bazar: Four arrested
At least 12 people were injured when a group of miscreants attacked the Probarona Purnima festival of Buddhists at Madhyam Rakhaine Para in Cox's Bazar on Sunday afternoon.
The police arrested four people at night for their involvement in the attack on the religious festival at Choufaldandi union.
The police and witnesses said about 10 to 12 criminals -- all in a drunken state -- led by local Union Parishad member Monir Ahmed's son Ziaul Haque tried to enter a Rakhaine temple in the afternoon. But after facing resistance, they attacked the festival venue, resulting in a clash with the Rakhaines.
Later at 5:00pm, a clash ensued again after a group of criminals led by UP member Monir Ahmed again attacked the festival.
On receiving information, Cox's Bazar Police Superintendent Md Sakhawat Hossain rushed to the spot. He asked the police to bring the situation under control and arrest the criminals.
At night, the police conducted raids and arrested four people -- Bedar Alam, 24, Md Ramzan, 25, Abu Bakar, 21, and Sahar Ali, 24.
Additional police have been deployed on the troubled spot.
Accused UP member Monir Ahmed was not available for comments despite repeated attempts.
