First murder case filed over BDR deaths
Police finally filed two murder cases against unidentified persons last night in connection with the deaths of two BDR jawans.
Both the cases were filed with New Market Police Station after postmortem reports confirmed that lance nayek Mobarak Hossain of Battalion-29 and havildar Mohiuddin, 48, of Battalion-28 of Chittagong had been murdered.
A total of 46 BDR personnel have died so far under mysterious circumstances since the bloody mutiny at the BDR headquarters during February 25-26. But the BDR authorities have claimed that the border guards either died of cardiac arrest or any other disease or committed suicide.
Mobarak died at Pilkhana hospital on March 22 and Mohiuddin on May 5. Later, New Market police sent the bodies to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Their family members alleged that the two BDR members were tortured to death but the police then filed two unnatural death cases.
Asked about the delay in filing the murder cases, Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of New Market Police Station told The Daily Star, "We have been confirmed about the murders after receiving the autopsy reports and chemical test reports."
Sources said police filed the murder cases against unidentified persons although the victims were under the custody of CID, Rab and army personnel at Pilkhana.
Kamrul said, "The cases were filed against unidentified people. The causes of the deaths and identity of the murderers will be unearthed through investigation."
Mobarak fled the BDR headquarters during the mutiny and later reported to the barrack, said sources.
Soon after his death, Mobarak's relatives alleged that he was tortured to death.
Sources at Dhaka Medical College morgue said Mobarak's wrists, arms, knees and shoulders were badly bruised and swollen.
Havildar Mohiuddin was declared dead after he was taken to the DMCH at about 11:30pm on May 5. His body also bore several injury marks, said DMCH sources.
