Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia
Flute maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia will be in Dhaka for a solo performance. The exclusive concert will take place at the Dhaka Club on October 16, says a press release. In association with the event management group Web Entertainment Ltd, Dhaka Club is organising the event.
The maestro will arrive, along with three other instrumentalists, a day before his performance. Prior to the concert, a press conference will take place at Dhaka Club on October 15. The flutist will leave Dhaka the day after his performance.
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia was born in Allahabad, India in 1938. His father was a wrestler, who wanted Chaurasia to follow his footsteps. Chaurasia has said that he takes advantage of his wrestling training as it gives him immense stamina and lung power that are the hallmarks of his flute playing.
He started as a classical vocalist at the age of 15. Later, he switched to playing the flute under the tutelage of Pandit Bholanath Prasanna of Varanasi.
Chaurasia is considered to be a rare combination of innovator and traditionalist. He has expanded the expressive possibilities of the bansuri through his masterful techniques.
Apart from classical music, Chaurasia has made a mark as a music director in Bollywood along with Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, forming a group called Shiv-Hari. He has also collaborated with various world musicians in experimental cross-cultural performances, including the fusion group Shakti. Chaurasia received the 'Padma Bhushan' in 1992.
