Asian stocks mixed on US data
Asian markets were mixed on Wednesday as a weaker yen and upbeat regional economic data was tempered by news that consumer confidence in the United States had unexpectedly fallen.
Sydney was 0.20 percent off and Seoul one percent down.
Hong Kong fell 0.28 percent as dealers locked in profits ahead of a one-day China National Day break.
TOKYO: Up 0.33 percent. The Nikkei-225 index gained 33.03 points to 10,133.23.
Before the opening bell the government reported that industrial output rose 1.8 percent in August from July, led by higher production of cars, electronics and machinery.
Toyota Motor was flat at 3,570 yen on its plan to recall some 3.8 million vehicles in the United States -- its largest-ever recall there -- due to problems with floor mats.
Mitsubishi Estate fell 1.4 percent to 1,412 yen.
HONG KONG: Down 0.28 percent. The Hang Seng Index fell 57.92 points to 20,955.25.
Hong Kong markets will be closed Thursday for the National Day holiday.
SHANGHAI: Up 0.90 percent. The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, was up 24.89 points to 2,779.43.
SEOUL: Down 1.0 percent. The KOSPI ended down 16.91 points at 1,673.14.
TAIPEI: Up 1.07 percent. The weighted index rose 79.19 points to 7,509.17.
SINGAPORE: Up 0.35 percent. The Straits Times Index rose 9.26 points to 2,672.57.
BANGKOK: Up 0.25 percent. The Stock Exchange of Thailand gained 1.78 points to close at 717.07.
KUALA LUMPUR: Down 0.51 percent. The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index lost 6.13 points to 1,202.08.
Construction company IJM Corp lost 3.4 percent to 4.50 ringgit.
JAKARTA: Up 1.0 percent. The Jakarta composite index rose 23.76 points to 2,467.59.
MANILA: Down 0.23 percent. The composite index fell 6.50 points to 2,800.82.
WELLINGTON: Up 0.18 percent. The NZX-50 index gained 5.67 points to 3,161.06.
SkyTV rose six cents to 4.74 and SkyCity ended four cents down at 3.25 dollars while Auckland Airport fell one cent to 1.86.
MUMBAI: Up 1.63 percent. The 30-share Sensex index rose 273.93 points to 17,126.84, a level last seen in May 2008.
