Police arrested 10 villagers following the incident and filed a case, accusing 30 villagers to go on an arrest spree that forced twenty-nine families flee their homes deserting the locality.
Source said the clash ensued when a five-member team led by assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) Atiar Rahman and Khorshed Alam went to arrest one Md Harun, who claimed to be on bail, at Sikderbari of Fatehnagar village under Joara union of the upazila around 3:00am.
Harun claimed to be on bail and opposed the arrest that resulted in an altercation with police.
At one stage, police started beating and dragging Harun out of his house.
Female members of Harun's family, who tried to save and hold back him from police, were also assaulted physically, they alleged.
The reported excesses of police angered Harun's relatives and neighbours who later attacked the police and confined them in the house.
On information, Joara Union Parishad Chairman Jashim Uddin rushed to the spot to settle the matter at around 4:00am.
But before the matter could be settled, another team from Chandonaish Police Station led by SI Faruk reached there at around 4:30am.
Villagers alleged that the policemen started beating up the villagers and fired on them, leaving eight people injured.
Talking to the local reporters, the UP chairman alleged that while they were about to reach an understanding, the second team of police came to the spot and attacked the villagers leaving at least eight people injured, including two with bullets.
Jasim also alleged that police ransacked several houses and took away valuables from them.
Contacted, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mezbah Uddin of Patiya Circle refuted the allegations of opening fire and police excesses.
“There was no document of bail and Harun also could not show the paper,” claimed the ASP.
Besides, police only fired one blank shot to disperse the villagers as they attacked the law enforcers with stones, he said.
“Nobody was bullet-hit and two of our officers - ASI Atiar and ASI Khorshed -- were injured by the villagers,” he claimed.
Police filed a case accusing 30 villagers, including UP chairman as the prime accused, and arrested 10 villagers, informed the ASP who visited the spot in the morning.
