Set up climate court
An acceptable global planning should be made at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) to tackle the consequences of climate change across the globe, said the citizens in an opinion-giving programme in the city on Saturday.
A total of 100 citizens from different parts of the country gave their opinions on global climate policy and voted on some specific climate issues at the programme organised by the Incidin, a non-government organisation.
The citizens said the government should actively participate in the COP15 negotiations and demand compensation from the countries responsible for global climate change.
They also expressed grave concern over global warming and its feared consequences, said Incidin officials at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters' Unity yesterday.
Executive Director of Incidin Bangladesh AKM Masud Ali said the opinions and recommendations collected from people of different strata would be handed over to government delegation which will attend the COP15 at Copenhagen in December this year.
The citizens also opined that an international 'climate court' should be established in COP15 for controlling the states largely responsible for global warming.
They said there should be provisions for bringing those countries under legal measures which will not implement the decisions to be made at the conference.
All the participants unanimously agreed that an effective initiative should be taken right now in establishing an international fund for assisting poor countries so that they can adapt with the climate imbalances.
They also recommended that the price of fuel oil should be much higher in the developed and higher income countries responsible for greenhouse gas emissions.
Incidin Executive Directors AKM Mustak Ali and Ratan Sarkar also spoke at the press conference.
