Injury-trap on Mirpur roads
Most of the roads and alleys of different sections of Mirpur area have long been in dilapidated condition due to negligence of the authorities concerned causing untold sufferings to the local residents.
Of them, the condition of section-11 Bazar Road (locally called Egaronumber Bazar Road) is so rough and ragged that the residents of the area do not even dare to use it while going to the kitchen market.
Akhtar Hossain, a wholesaler of Egaronumber Bazar, said they have to suffer a lot, as the trucks carrying their goods cannot use the road for unloading.
"We unload goods far away from the market, which adds to our expenditure," he said.
The road also comes under ankle-to-knee-deep water very often even after a moderate shower. It has remained in such a bad state since the BNP-led government, said shopkeepers of the market.
Mohammad Musa, a retailer, said they have to give three to four times the usual rickshaw fare as most of them do not venture to use the road.
"Our business activities have dropped drastically due to the bad condition of the road as customers prefer to go to other markets to avoid the hassles on the road," said Anis, another businessman of the market.
Anwar, a resident of the area, said the road goes under knee-deep water after a shower due to lack of drainage system.
He said DCC started to repair the road but it has remained stalled for the last two months.
Like the Bazar Road, many other roads under section-11 of Mirpur, including road-12, Avenue-4, road-3, 6, 7, 9, 23 of Block-D also need renovation.
The other run-down roads include roads 2, 3, 5, 8/1, 9/1, 9/2, 13/5 and 4/2 of block-B, roads 2, 3, 4, 6, 1 of block-A, avenue-2 and 1, 2, 3, 6, and 9 of block-C under section-12.
Roads 3 and 4 of block new -C and road-6 of block-C, roads 4 and 5 of block-F and Shareng Bari Mazar Road under section-1 are also severely damaged.
The roads 6 and 8 of block-D, road-1 of block-B under section-6 and different roads of block-G and road-19 of block G-1 of section-2 have also been rough and bumpy over the years.
Arman, a resident of block-A of section-12, said road-2 and road-3 go under knee-deep water even after a short raining due to lack of drainage system.
Sadia Ainun, a resident of block -A under section 1, said two roads in block 9 and 8 have never been repaired for the last 15 years.
No vehicles except for bicycle and motorcycle can ply the roads due to uncovered drains causing sufferings to locals for the last two years and DCC have taken no steps so far, said Shafikul Islam, a shopkeeper of the road.
Abdur Razzak, executive engineer of DCC zone-8, said they had invited proposals for the repair of roads under zone-8.
"We will repair the roads on priority basis," he said.
The renovation of other roads of section-11 and other sections will be done under the next budget.
