3 sisters drown in Padma
Three sisters drowned in the Padma river in Munshiganj yesterday leaving their parents and relatives shell-shocked.
The dead are Riya Akhter, 19, and Mansura Akhter, 17, daughter of Tadbir Halder, a businessman from Islampur, and their cousin Borsha Akhter, daughter of Abdur Rab.
Family members say the sisters came to Munshiganj with family members from Faridabad and Dhanmondi in the capital.
As they went to bathe in the Padma, a sister slipped into the waters and the others tried to rescue her. All three drowned as none of them knew how to swim, say witness and family sources.
Relatives and locals pulled Riya, graduate student at a government college, and Borsha, student of business administration at a private university in Dhanmondi, out of water in an unconscious state. They were rushed to Munshiganj General Hospital where the duty doctor pronounced them dead.
The body of Mansura Akhter, who studied higher secondary at a public college, could not be recovered till filing of this report at 9:30 last night.
