One killed, 20 hurt in AL intra-party clashes
Clashes between rival Awami League (AL) activists left a local AL leader killed in Pabna and 20 people injured in Shailkupa on Monday and Tuesday.
Tomser Ali, vice president of Dhalarchar union unit of AL and a resident of Kamarpur village under Dhalarchar union in Bera upazila of Pabna district, was killed as two rival groups clashed at Kamarpur on Sunday night, reports our Pabna correspondent.
A gang led by Lalmiah attacked Tomser, prompting clash at Kamarpur village, police and locals said. The attackers beat up and hacked Tomser, leaving him critically injured. He was taken to hospital where he died the next morning, on the day of Eid-ul-Fitre.
“The clash followed past enmity between the rival factions. A case was filed against 18 people about the incident. We are trying to nab the criminals,” said Md Zillur Rahman, officer in charge of Bera Police Station.
Our Jhenidah correspondent adds: Twenty people were injured as two groups of Awami League (AL) men clashed over misappropriation of rice, wheat and money allotted for burying ground and mosque at a village in Shailkupa upazila of Jhenidah on Tuesday.
A tense situation is prevailing in the area.
Two tonnes of rice and wheat under food for work and test relief were allotted for mosque and burying ground at Barda village under Shailkupa upazila, police and locals said.
But maintenance work of the mosque and burying ground was not done properly and a section of villagers blamed local UP member Nazrul Islam for misappropriating the allotted rice and wheat, they said.
On the Eid day, two groups of AL men led by Nazrul Islam and Ashraf Matabbar exchanged heated words over distribution of sweetmeats.
The next morning, the two groups engaged in a fierce clash with batons, billhook and spears, leaving 20 people injured.
They were admitted into Shailkupa, Kushtia and Jhenidah hospitals.
Contacted, the officer-in-charge of Shailkupa Police Station said, “The clash occurred between followers of two local leaders of Awami League. The situation is under control now. Additional police have been deployed to avert further clash.”
