FFs pledge to fight for economic emancipation
The freedom fighters, who achieved independence of the country, would now have to fight another war imbued with the spirit of the War of Liberation for economic emancipation.
The freedom fighters resolved this at a view exchange meeting organised by Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, Chittagong divisional institutional command coordination council at IFCO Plaza near GEC Intersection in the port city on Monday.
They also demanded raising of the service age for freedom fighters to 67 years, speeding up the trial of war criminals, restoration of constitution of 1972, treatment of freedom fighters free of cost and ensuring education and job for their children.
Bangladesh Bank General Manager Md Nowshad Ali Chowdhury was the chief guest at the meeting. Freedom fighters and academicians Md Abu Zafar Chowdhury, Sheikhar Dostidar, Abdul Halim Bir Pratik and Commander Comrade Md Shah Alam were the special guests.
Council convener Fazal Ahmed presided over the meeting moderated by Member Secretary Md Sirajul Islam Chowdhury.
Int'l Buddhist award for KDS chairman
KDS Group Chairman Khalilur Rahman has been awarded Vijaya Shree, an international Buddhist award.
All India Bhikkhu Sangha conferred the award on Khalilur Rahman for his contribution to building the economy of Bangladesh since 1983 and effort to facilitate and augment educational facilities and institutions in the country.
It is for the first time that a Bangladeshi won the prestigious Vijaya Shree award, said a KDS Group press release in the port city on Tuesday.
Khalilur Rahman will receive the award from the Sangstha Secretary General Ven Dr Dhamma Viriyo at the Sangstha Headquarters at Buddha Gaya in Indian state of Bihar on October 31.
Training for docs on HIV/AIDS
Bangladesh Integrated Social Advancement Programme (BISAP) organised a training programme on 'HIV/AIDS prevention' for doctors at Maulana Bhasani auditorium of University of Science and Technology, Chittagong (USTC) here on Tuesday.
Addressing the opening session of the programme as the chief guest USTC Advocacy Director and Head of Community Medicine Dr Jalaluddin emphasised prevention of HIV/STI/AIDS pandemic and spread of other STDs. He also underscored the need for creating mass awareness and strengthening communication and negotiation skill to prevent the deadly diseases.
Head of the Anatomy Department, Prof Dr Kazi Rafiqul Haque chaired the programme moderated by Dr Shahnewaz Siraj Mamun.
Focusing on social mobilisation Dr Shahnewaz said individual groups and government face the challenges of breaking down the barriers for young people to seek information, services.
BISAP Programme Manager Mujibur Rahman highlighted the activities of the organisation to prevent HIV/AIDS at the training programme where over 50 doctors participated.
Project for persons with disabilities
The “Disabled Medication and Rehabilitation Project” jointly run by Sagorika Rotary Club and Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled (RCD) was inaugurated on Thursday.
Chittagong Divisional Commissioner MAN Siddique inaugurated the project as the chief guest at a ceremony at Holy Crescent Hospital .
Siddique in his speech lauded the contribution of Rotary Club in promoting education, training and human welfare activities among the disadvantaged people.
He called for providing higher treatment for all persons with disabilities in Chittagong region using the latest technologies.
The Rotary Club President Khon Ranjan Roy presided over the function while RCD Chief Executive Dr Kamruzzaman, the club Past President Rezaul Karim, the hospital Managing Director Brigadier General (Retd) KM Baker, Rotary Deputy Governor M Ali Ashraf and Assistant Governor M Shahjahan spoke among others.
The project aims at offering the persons with disabilities long-time treatment at a cheaper cost and rehabilitation facilities, said the organisers.
Six vermicelli factories fined
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) during its ongoing anti-adulteration drive fined six food product factories Tk 2.90 lakh in the port city on Wednesday.
The Rab-7 of Chittagong in a joint mobile court during the drive in different areas of Rajakhali Road and Chaktai under Bakolia police station fined the factories for producing vermicelli in an unhygienic way, weight manipulation and marketing them without mentioning the date of production and expiry.
The mobile court fined Chandtara Vermicelli Factory Tk 30,000, Rasel Vermicelli Factory Tk 85,000, RK Vermicelli Factory Tk 30,000, Hossain Vermicelli Factory Tk 70,000, Abdul Mannan Vermicelli Factory Tk 35,000 and Rafiq Vermicelli Factory Tk 40,000.
Executive Magistrate Khondoker Nurul Haque conducted the mobile court where representatives from Bangladesh Standard Testing Institute (BSTI), Chittagong and Rab 7 assisted, said the sources.
Need for culture instts underscored
Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury emphasised the need for setting up of cultural institutions for smooth practice of culture and tradition.
The mayor was addressing as the chief guest the certificate giving ceremony of Alauddin Lalitakola Kendra, Chittagong at Theatre Institute Chittagong (TIC) auditorium on Thursday.
“Despite lacking in cultural institution under government management Chittagong has a glorious heritage of culture to present a number of famous singers from here,” he said.
He assured all sorts of help from his side in this regard.
Kendra President Ranjit Rakkhit presided over the ceremony where 40 participants received certificates.
