Climate change: Compensation demanded from rich countries

Speakers at a discussion on Thursday said developed nations are responsible for global climate change and they should take immediate measures to fight its impacts.
They demanded $50 million from rich countries as compensation for the adverse effects facing Bangladesh.
The country suffers huge economic losses because of frequent natural calamities triggered by climate change, they added.
The speakers said this at the discussion organised by Barendra Procharabhijan Dal, a group of eight NGOs, in cooperation with Oxfam GB at the office of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
They said climate change has posed a great threat to agriculture, environment, ecology, biodiversity and even human health and habitation across the world.
Natural calamities such as floods, droughts and cyclones have become regular phenomena in the country because of the increasing climate change, they added.
Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar Tapu of Geology and Mining department at Rajshahi University was the key speaker at the programme chaired by Prova Executive Director Abu M Musa.
Anil Marandi, president of Rajshahi Jatiya Adivasi Parishad, Abul Kalam Azad of CPB, Kalpana Roy of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, and Mozammel Haque, former deputy director of social welfare department, also spoke.
