'Shootouts' kill 2 criminals

An alleged criminal was killed in a 'shootout' between his cohorts and Rapid Action Battalion in the city's Mirpur area while an unidentified snatcher was killed in a 'shootout' with police in Chawgachha of Jessore early yesterday.
In Mirpur, Mohammad Ali, 25, an associate of top terror Shahor Ali, died in a gunfight with Rab-4 near Mirpur Outer Stadium around 2:45am.
Rab sources said some suspected persons being challenged by Rab opened fire at the law-enforcers who also retaliated with gunshots in the stadium area. Mohammad Ali died on the spot.
However, other associates of Mohammad Ali fled the scene at one stage of the gunfight leaving a pistol with three bullets, a knife and Tk 23,440 in cash on the scene.
According to Rab, Shahor Ali also was killed in another shootout with Rab in Mirpur on September 12.
Mohammad Ali was one of the accused in the attack on Rab Major Khandakar Golam Sarwar and snatching a criminal from Rab custody in Mirpur on September 13.
ASP Kaniz Hossain of Rab-4 said the gunfight took place when the elite force members were conducting a block raid in the area.
A correspondent from Jessore reports: An unidentified mugger was killed in gunfight with police while fleeing after robbing a passenger-carrying human hauler on Jessore-Chawgachha road at about 2:00am.
"On information, we chased the gang members who hurled bombs forcing us to fire back," said a police official.
He added that other criminals however managed to flee the scene. A case was filed with Chawgachha police station in this regard.
