Bangla Academy honours Shah Abdul Karim

To pay homage to the recently deceased 'Baul Samrat' Shah Abdul Karim, Bangla Academy arranged a memorial programme at its Seminar Room on September 16, according to a press release. Noted personalities spoke on the life and works of Abdul Karim at the programme.
Mohammad Abdul Hye, director, Bangla Academy gave the welcome speech. Folk researcher and teacher of the Music Department, Dhaka University, Professor Mridul Kanti Chakrabarty and renowned folk singer Mustafa Zaman Abbasi spoke on the occasion. Director general of Bangla Academy, Dr. Shamsuzzaman Khan presided over the programme.
In his speech Abbasi said, "Shah Abdul Karim wrote songs on several aspects of life and his songs lucidly convey social messages."
"Through his songs, Shah Abdul Karim enriched our heritage of folk music," said Dr. Khan at the programme.
After the discussion a musical programme was held at the venue. Razia Sultana, Mohammad Enamul Haque and Professor Mridul Kanti Chakrabarty rendered songs of Shah Abdul Karim. Dipak Paul, Sabuj Chandra Sarkar, Mohammad Hossain and Sheikh Jalal accompanied the singers on the instruments.
