PM to open Nazrul Complex today

Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the Nazrul Complex built on the tomb of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam beside the Dhaka University (DU) Central Mosque at 7:00am today.
Briefing reporters DU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said Hasina laid the foundation stone of the complex marking the birth centenary of poet Nazrul on May 25, 1999.
Prof Arefin said work on the project was stopped after the changeover of the government in 2001.
Later, an adviser to immediate-past caretaker government Anwarul Iqbal took the initiative to restart the project with the financial assistance of the local government department in March 2008, said the VC.
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanok, DU Por-VC Prof Harun-Or-Rashid, Treasurer Prof Mizanur Rahman, Prof Rafiqul Islam and Khilkhil Kazi, granddaughter of the poet, were present at the press briefing.
Nanok said this imposing complex would be an added attraction for many visitors of DU campus.
It will also add a new dimension to historic campus, he added.
An information centre has been built at the complex where information about poet Nazrul would be available.
Mazharul Islam is the architect of the complex which has been constructed at a cost Tk 1.51 crore.
