Erosion devours vast areas of 20 Tangail villages
Vast tracts of land of 20 villages in Gabsara and Arjuna unions under Bhuapur upazila in the district have gone into the River Jamuna in last one week.
The worst affected villages are Rulipara, Jungipur, Rehai Gabsara, Noorpur, Chandganj, Biswanathpur, Joypur, Rajapur, Digrir Char, Rampur in Gabsara union while Borar Boira, Jomar Boira, Shushua, Ramail, Taltala, Bharua and Govindapur in Arjuna union.
Around 300 families have lost their dwelling houses and 300 others have shifted to safer places.
Aman and Aus paddy fields on hundreds of acres of land in the two unions have already gone into the river.
Jomer Boira Primary School building in Aurjuna union has gone into the Jamuna while two-storied Gabsara Union Health Complex building, the only treatment centre for people of the 37 char villages, has been sold in auction as it was on the verge of being devoured by the river.
Ten other establishments including two mosques are also threatened due to the erosion.
In the two unions, over a dozen educational institutions including Rulipara Primary School, Jungipur Government Primary School, Joypur Primary School, Digrir Char Government Primary School, Beltiapara Primary School, Shushua Alim Madrasa, Taltala Primary School, Basudevkol Fakir Moin Uddin High School, Char Chanduni Kawmi Madrasa are facing threat.
Educational institutions of char areas should be set up at safer distances from the river, Upazila Education Officer Sharif Rafiqul Islam told newsmen after visiting erosion-affected Rulipara Primary School lest week.
“Despite several applications, no initiatives have been taken to check erosion in Gabsara. Hundreds of riverside people become homeless while quite a few educational institutions go into the river every year," said Gabsara union parishad Chairman Anwar Hossain Jinnah.
When contacted, Bhuapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jahir Raihan said, “I have visited the erosion affected areas and directed the local public representatives to make lists of the erosion victims. Necessary help will be provided for the affected people after getting the lists."
