Mirpur traders demand extension of shopping hour
Local traders yesterday put up a barricade on a road at Mirpur-10 in the city for an hour, demanding extension of time for keeping the shops open until 10:00pm.
Witnesses said over 500 traders and their employees held a rally in front of Shah Ali Plaza on the road around 8:00pm after closing their business establishments at Mirpur-10 roundabout, causing severe traffic congestion. They also torched several tyres during the rally.
Mohammad Murad, a trader, said the peak hour for their business is evening but they have to close their business establishments as per the government time soon after Iftar, which hampers their business greatly.
Several other agitating traders said if such a situation continues, they would not be able to pay their employees Eid bonus and even salaries.
Mirpur police said the agitating traders removed the barricade around 9:00pm following their request.
Police, however, said none was arrested in this connection.
