Withdrawal of army camp resumes
The army camps withdrawal resumed in Khagrachhari yesterday as part of the government initiative to implement the 1997 Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord.
The Chhantilla Army Camp under Panchhari zone in the district was withdrawn, army sources confirmed.
Panchhari Army Zone commander formally handed over the charge of the land to the UNO and requested him to ensure security in the surrounding areas.
The camp, consisted of about 35 army personnel, had been providing security to 10 villages since 1988, sources confirmed.
When contacted, Panchhari UNO Sheikh Abdul Kader said the demolition work was started on August 10 and completed yesterday, two days ahead of schedule. Now the camp was attached with Panchhari army zone.
Mohammad Abdullah, Deputy Commissioner of Khagrachhari, said a total of nine camps were withdrawn till yesterday.
The withdrawn camps are Manikchhari, Lemuchhari, Pomangpara, Chhoto Panchhari, Chhantilla, Perachhara, Mogaichhari, Baillachhari and Dashbil, he said.
Three more temporary army camps will be withdrawn under Guimara Army Brigade as the government on July 29 announced it would dismantle 35 temporary security camps in the hill districts by September.
