Mugger killed in cop firing
A mugger was shot dead by police in the city's Sutrapur yesterday.
He was identified as Roman, 19, from Postagala in Shyampur.
Meanwhile, Billal Sardar, 30, and Mohammad Babul, 35, were shot by a gang of three criminals in the city's Gulshan yesterday.
They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Officer-in-charge of Sutrapur Police Station Tofazzol Hossain said Roman succumbed to his injuries at Pangu Hospital at around 6:00am.
He added around 3:00am Roman and his two accomplices intercepted a rickshaw and tried to snatch money from two vegetables traders at Faridabad.
On hearing the victims screaming, police on duty reached the spot. Criminals tried to stab a police prompting them to open fire that left Roman severely injured.
In Gulshan, Billal, who was crossing Sattala Basti on bike, got bullet hit by the armed criminals.
Hearing the gunshot, locals chased after the criminals. Hotel boy Babul was injured when they fired on the locals while fleeing the scene.
Police could not ascertain the cause behind the shooting.
JUBO LEAGUE MEN CLASH WITH COPS
Local Jubo League activists yesterday clashed with Mohammadpur police at Dhaka Udyan following arrest of their mates on charges of conducting an attack that vandalised a rehabilitation centre and a construction firm in the area on Wednesday.
Witnesses said some 25 Jubo League activists attacked the police team at around 12:30pm to snatch the arrestees, Shafiq and Akter, from police custody.
By the time the police informed their high-ups of the incident seeking additional force the criminals regrouped and increased in number.
Locals said DCC ward Councillor Abu Sayeed Bepari along with some 300 pro-ruling party men from the adjacent areas being equipped with brickbats and bamboo sticks attacked the police team. Police retaliated with at least four rounds of bullet.
Meanwhile, around 100 additional police personnel and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members reached the spot. Five people including three police officials sustained injuries.
Officer-in-Charge Bhuyan Mahbub Hasan said "We made the arrest in a case filed by Iqbal Hossain, a staff of Jiboner Alo Drug Rehabilitation Centre. The criminals attacked us while we were taking the arrestees to the police station."
Local Jubo League activists Wednesday morning vandalised Jiboner Alo Drug Rehabilitation Centre and Salam Enterprise at Dhaka Udyan on refusal of toll of Tk 50 thousand from each office for the National Mourning Day programme. They also looted Tk 16,600 and two mobile phone sets.
