Trial a must if extra-judicial killing proved
Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday said the government would not shy away from the trial of any extra-judicial killing if such killing is proved.
"The government does not support the extra-judicial killing, because everybody has the fundamental right to live," he said at the regular monthly luncheon meeting of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) at Sheraton Hotel.
While speaking on the 'Rule of Law' as the guest of honour, the minister said the Islamic militants are dangerous for everybody, as they want to establish the 'Rules of God', but they themselves do not know what are the rules of God, he said.
He said it is not only the duty of the government to contain the Islamic militants but it is also the duty of all in the society.
The minister urged the people to provide information about militancy to help try the militants.
He said the government is seriously considering introduction of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) system for disposing the large number of cases pending in the courts for trial due to lack of judges.
The government would apply the ADR system not only for disposing of the civil cases, but also the petty criminal cases, the minister said adding that the country has been suffering from the dearth of experienced judges. "This is why we are seriously considering introduction of the alternative dispute resolution," he said.
In the ADR system, the judges would call both the parties of cases to dispose of quickly to reduce the pressure of cases pending in the courts for trial, Shafique said.
Many countries of the world have been following the ADR system for quick disposal of the cases, he mentioned.
Replying to a query from a businessman, the minister said the government would not spare if a judge is found corrupt in judicial system.
"Of course, we would take punitive actions against the corrupt judges, if it is proved," he said.
Syed Ershad Ahmed, president of the AmCham, moderated the meeting. A good number of businessmen and diplomats were also present.
