Dr Kamal stresses need for judicial watchdog
Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday stressed the need for establishing a monitoring system in the courts to see whether people are getting justice without hindrance.
He was speaking at an extended meeting of the party held in its head office in the capital.
Urging prospective candidates for the upcoming parliamentary election to be transparent in their activities, he said people who are interested in contesting in the upcoming national election should voluntarily submit their wealth statements to the Anti-corruption Commission.
Referring to a now stayed court directive making disclosure of eight categories of information mandatory for persons running for public offices, he said candidates of Gono Forum will disclose the information to the public despite the fact that the Supreme Court has yet to give its final words on it.
Opposing the notion that if the laws are relaxed, investment will increase and the prevailing stagnant condition of the economy will be improved, he said the current situation should not hamper honest businessmen.
Regarding the obstacles in establishing rule of law in the country during the BNP-Jamaate-led regime of the immediate past elected government, he said, "The rule of law was in exile." Referring to the alleged involvement of a former state minister in dropping the name of an accused murder suspect from a charge sheet, he said, "People, who were entrusted to establish the rule of law, buried it deliberately."
Reiterating his pledge to serve the country, the eminent jurist said, "Becoming the prime minister is not my aim, my politics aims at ensuring economic emancipation of the common people."
Gono Forum General Secretary Saifuddin Manik, Presidium Members Pankaj Bhattacharya, Abdur Rauf, and Mafizul Islam Khan Kamal, its Joint Secretary Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, and Organising Secretary Advocate Altaf Hossain also spoke.
