Moeen submits petition through lawyers
Former army chief Gen (retd) Moeen U Ahmed through his lawyers submitted a petition to a Dhaka court yesterday to challenge a Tk 100 crore defamation suit filed against him by former state minister for energy Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku.
Advocate Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan also sought three months' time to reply to the notice issued by the court on Moeen to explain why his property should not be attached.
Judge SM Saiful Islam of the Third Joint District Judge's Court granted the petition and asked the petitioner to submit the written objection on August 16, the date fixed earlier for hearing of the suit.
On July 12, Tuku filed the suit against Moeen for making derogatory remarks involving him in March 2007.
The complaint reads that on March 27, 2007, the then army chief said corrupt politicians had siphoned off at least Tk 20,000 crore from the energy sector during the four-party alliance government.
He made the remarks at a tea party he hosted in honour of the freedom fighters at the National Parade Square.
The following day different national dailies ran reports on the comments that damaged Tuku's reputation in society and political fraternity, the complaint added.
