A long pipe being used to illegally extract sand from the Shitalakhya river in broad daylight near the Kanchpur bridge, right next to the capital. The hunger for sand and unregulated extraction causes significant damage to the banks and affects those who live there. But the sand lifters only stop when the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority occasionally launches a “drive”. Photo: Anisur Rahman
A woman and her little daughter winnowing paddy in the capital’s Beribandh area. Boro paddy is taken to Beribandh area after it is harvested from different villages in Savar. A female worker earns about Tk 600 a day for winnowing the paddy. Photo: Rashed Shumon
Dhaka has seen a daytime temperature rise of nearly 3 degrees Celcius in the last 20 years, largely as a result of the rapid increase in concrete structures and pavements that retain heat and fall in greenery. Those who have to put in hard labour outdoors during the daytime are naturally the worst sufferers of the phenomenon. As high humidity worsened the soaring mercury in the capital yesterday, a rickshaw-puller is seen taking a breather under the canopy of a shady tree in Hatirjeel. PHOTO: PALASH KHAN
The temperature has been so high over the last couple of days, that coal stocks carry the real risk of catching fire from the heat. To keep this pile of coal cool, staffers at Barishal’s city’s Rupatoli had to spray water over it. This photo was taken yesterday. Photo: Titu Das

Recently, a family was spotted crossing the kilometre-long jetty at Kumira Ghat, Sitakunda, on a van with small children in tow. They also got on a speedboat to get to the island, hoping for a safe journey in severely unsafe conditions. PHOTO: RAJIB RAIHAN
