Mindless arson burns 2 more in Tangail
A driver and his helper were seriously burnt after miscreants firebombed a truck in Bhuapur upazila of Tangail early today during BNP-led 20-party alliance’s countrywide hartal.
Trucker Uzzal Hossain, 32, and helper, Mamun Miah, 22, were attacked at Sar Palsia in the upazila around 1:00am on the way to Tangail Sadar, reports our Tangail correspondent.
“Both sustained 50 percent burn injuries. Locals rushed them to Tangail Medical College Hospital. Later, they were referred to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment,” Mohammad Akheruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Bangabandhu Bridge East Police Station, said.
Police were conducting drives in the area to catch the culprits, but no arrests could be made in this connection till 9:00am, the OC said.
At least 72 people have been killed in the political violence that spiraled in the country since the start of this year. Most of the victims have been innocents – not related to politics.
In Dhaka, police detained 24 activists of BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and its student affiliate Islami Chhatra Shibir from different parts of the capital in the last 24 hours, Dhaka Metropolitan Police media wing sources said.
In Munshiganj, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) 11 recovered five crude bombs and two petrol bombs at Manikpur of the district town last night, reports our local correspondent.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a drive in a house of the area around 11.00pm and seized the abandoned from the kitchen. No one was arrested in this connection, Abul Khayer Fakir, OC of Sadar Police Station, said.
