“Maritime boundary settlement: For whom?”(July 20, 2014)
Hafeejul Alam
Thanks indeed to Anu Muhammad for raising certain pertinent question about our sea resources which are highly relevant to our national interest. Bangladesh has got 1, 18,813 sq km of territorial sea (through a mandatory verdict of the UN Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague) while the size of the country is 1, 47,570 sq km. The government should try it's best to avoid exclusive foreign involvement and try to exploit our vast maritime resources by our own experts, even if it takes a bit more time to gather sufficient financial and technical resources. I believe, initially the best option might be a sort of joint venture between Bapex and the experienced entities from countries like South Korea or Japan.

I think it is win-win for both countries. Long pending disputes have not given much to either country. India being a bigger nation must show maturity in Teesta and land boundary issues.
