Low lying areas flooded in Lalmonirhat

Onrush of water from upstream across the border since Monday triggered flash flood in the low lying areas and Teesta and Dharla river basin villages under five upazilas, leaving over 20,000 people marooned.
The affected upazilas are Hatibandha, Kaliganj, Aditmari, Patgram and Lalmonirhat Sadar.
However, the water levels of both the Teesta and Dharal were below the danger mark, said officials of Water Development Board (WDB).
Of them, Teesta water was flowing 10 centimeter below of its danger level at Dowani point of Hatibandha upazila while Dharla flowing eight centimeter below of its danger level at Kolakhawa Ghat point in Sadar upazila yesterday morning.
Lalmonirhat WDB Executive Engineer Shahjahan Talukder said, water from upstream suddens increased water levels in Teesta and Dharla, triggering flash flood in the areas.
Sahidar Rahman of Gobordhon village in Aditmari upazila said “About 200 families in the area suddenly got marooned by the water of Teesta on Monday night”.
We could not cook due to the flood water entering our kitchen, he said.
Delwar Rahman, a farmer of Char Sholmari village in Kaliganj upazila, said they have been reeled by flash flood caused due to onrush of water from the Teesta on Monday night.
