Remembering Asma Jahangir
The Daily Star published a piece titled “Asma Jahangir as I knew her” on February 19 which shed light on the life and work of the fearless rights advocate. Asma Jahangir's observations were often very precise. For example, once she said of the contempt case procedure that one has to fight such a case with one's hands tied.
Asma, the great human rights lawyer, touched hearts not only in Asia but all over the world. She was an outspoken critic of the military establishment of Pakistan—a rarity in the country. She was critical of the judiciary but fought for its integrity during General Musharraf's era. She was the first woman to have served as the president of Pakistan's leading bar association. Her legacy will always be remembered and cherished.
