BAIUST law students visit Rohingya camps

A group of law students from the Bangladesh Army International University of Science & Technology (BAIUST) have recently visited one of the world's largest refugee camps in Cox's Bazar. The Office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) and officers of camp-in-charge have facilitated this visit with required permission to have access to the Rohingya camps. BAIUST Law Department initiated a programme named 'community visit' where a group of students get the opportunity to experience a crisis or a social problem through a field visit. Here, students have experienced how more than one million of refugees are living inside the Rohingya camps in Ukhia, Cox's Bazar. In addition, they have also observed how the Bangladesh government is managing the crisis and what the present challenges are as it is likely to be a prolonged crisis. Mrettika Ganguly and Asif Elahi Dipto, two participants of this visit, expressed their views in a similar fashion as it gives them an intensive idea about the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis and its management. Shariful Islam Uzzal, another participant of this visit, expressed his experience as follows, 'this is a unique opportunity to experience a crisis from own eyes and interestingly my views have completely changed after this visit regarding the Rohingya crisis'. Aparajita Majumder and Samia Rahman further added that this visit helped them to understand the gaps between the law and reality and this experience will help them to think more critically whatever the legal crisis comes to them. This community visit lead by the head of the BAIUST Law Department with another faculty member.
