Gayeshwar free to walk out of jail
The High Court today granted bail to BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy for six months in a case filed for killing a Shibir activist.
The case was filed with Rampura Police Station after Mansur Pradhania, 20, was killed in a clash between law enforcers and the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, at Malibagh on December 29, 2013.
There is no legal bar to Gayeshwar’s release from the jail following the HC order, said his lawyer Nitai Roy Chowdhury.
Today, the HC also issued rule upon the government to explain why the BNP leader should not be granted regular bail in the case.
The HC bench of Justice Md Abdul Hafiz and Justice Md Ruhul Quddus granted the bail after hearing a petition filed by Gayeshwar seeking bail in the case.
Gayeshwar was sent to jail on his surrender before a Dhaka court on April 20 in the case.
Earlier, on April 29, a judge of another HC bench felt embarrass to hear the bail petition of Gayeshwar.
The law enforcers went on the action on December 29 last year after BNP-led 18-party alliance (now 19-party alliance) brought out a procession in support of BNP’s March for Democracy, which was set for that day. The government however foiled the programme by using excessive force later.
Mansur was a student at law department of City University in Banani.
