Fake DB on the prowl
Criminals posing as detectives duped three private service holders and took away Tk 7 lakh from them in the capital's Gulshan yesterday.
The victims were staff of Bengal Group of Industries. They withdrew the money from a local bank in the area to pay salaries to the company employees, police said.
After collecting the money from the bank, the officials began walking to for their office on Gulshan Avenue.
Suddenly, a microbus intercepted them and a group of four to five men, introducing themselves as plain clothes detective police, came out of the vehicle.
Raising allegation that they were carrying black money, the fake detectives handcuffed the officials and loaded them into the microbus.
The criminals later abandoned the staff at Matikata in Cantonment area after taking away the money around 1:00 pm.
Apart from Tk 7 lakh, the criminals took away Tk 4,500 that belonged to the three staff, said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station.
"We are investigating the incident and trying to nab the culprits," he added.
Nurul Huda, manager (Admin) of Bengal Group, filed a case in this connection.
Last month, police arrested a man who posing as a detective police attempted to kidnap a student of Rajshahi University.
In January, eight fake detectives were arrested by the police in separate drives. A microbus bearing the official mark of police, wireless sets and handcuffs were also seized at that time.
