Lili Reinhart to star in and produce film adaptation of ‘The Love Hypothesis’

Lili Reinhart is set to lead and executive produce "The Love Hypothesis", after earning the Best Actress award at Series Mania for her performance alongside Cooper Raiff in "Hal & Harper". This romantic comedy is a film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood's New York Times bestselling novel, which Amazon MGM Studios and MRC are developing.
The story follows Olive Smith, a dedicated PhD student in biology, who pretends to be in a relationship with Dr Adam Carlsen, a notoriously difficult and brilliant professor. Their fake romance challenges their logical ideas about love, throwing both their lives into unexpected turmoil.
Hazelwood's book, originally released in 2021 by Berkley, a Penguin Random House imprint, gained widespread acclaim and spent nearly a year on the New York Times bestseller list. The novel has been published in 40 countries and was chosen as Amazon's Best Romance of the Year. Hazelwood is also the author of other titles such as Problematic Summer Romance, Deep End, and Bride.
The film adaptation is being directed by Claire Scanlon ("Set It Up") from a screenplay by Sarah Rothschild ("The Sleepover"). Producing the project is Elizabeth Cantillon ("The Girl in the Spider's Web", "Charlie's Angels"), with executive production by Reinhart, Hazelwood, and Catherine Hagedorn.
Hazelwood expressed her excitement about the adaptation, stating, "I still can't quite believe this is real. I'm incredibly honoured to have talents like Elizabeth Cantillon, Claire Scanlon, and Lili Reinhart involved. They've worked on projects I absolutely adore, and I fully trust their vision for this film. It's amazing to see the book take on a new life in a different medium, and I hope they enjoy the process as much as I loved writing the story."
Reinhart, who will soon appear in "Hal & Harper" opposite Cooper Raiff and Mark Ruffalo—a project she also produced and which MUBI acquired after its Sundance debut—has a busy schedule ahead.
Her upcoming projects include "American Sweatshop", directed by Uta Briesewitz and screened at SXSW, as well as "The Very Best People", directed by Brian Swibel, and "Forbidden Fruits", Meredith Alloway's debut feature, set to be released by IFC Films in 2026. Additionally, she's producing and starring in "Fake Wedding", a romantic comedy in development at Amazon MGM through her production banner, Small Victory.
Claire Scanlon reunites with Amazon MGM following her work on "The People We Hate at the Wedding", which starred Allison Janney, Kristen Bell, and Ben Platt. Known for directing Netflix's hit rom-com "Set It Up", she has also helmed episodes of "Loot and Palm Royale" for Apple TV+, "Abbott Elementary" on ABC, and oversaw production and direction of "Unstable" Season 2 for Netflix.
